5 Reasons Why you Should Be Drinking Kombucha

Kombucha is a tea-based soft drink is an entirely natural product with a huge wealth of health benefits.

Nutritionist and macrobiotic chef Nicky Clinch tells us more about quite how beneficial this drink can be for our overall health.

Growing up in Hong Kong, Kombucha was known by the locals as the “Immortal Health Elixir” with many amazing and mysterious health benefits.

Originating in the Far East over 2000 years ago, Kombucha is a fermented beverage made from caffeinated tea (either black or green) and sugar (natural sugars like fruit and honey can also be used). Although during the fermentation process the live enzymes break down so much of the sugar that the end result actually possesses a very minimal sugar content. It contains plenty of good bacteria, B-vitamins, probiotics, anti-oxidants, vinegar, enzymes and a high concentration of good health and gut promoting acids such as acetic, gluconic and lactic acids.

Drawing from my understandings of Five Element theory*, Food Energetics and Macrobiotics** we can use Kombucha in our lives to help bring us back to balance, encourage optimal energy levels, thriving health and wellbeing and give us calm positive emotions.

HERE ARE MY TOP 5 REASONS WHY KOMBUCHA MAY HELP YOU

CLEANSING & EFFICIENT DETOXIFICATION

Kombucha has an amazingly vibrant sour taste to it as well as a high concentration of healthy acid. Energetically this aligns it within the Tree Element from The Five Elements, which supports and boosts our liver health and our body’s natural detoxification process. Drinking Kombucha regularly will kick-start our liver into full working gear, bringing on a more efficient detoxification process, helping our body cleanse excess toxins and promote optimal health and well being.

AIDS DIGESTIONS

Fermented foods and drinks such as Kombucha are incredibly beneficial for our digestion and gut health. Kombucha is full of good bacteria and probiotics, which replenish our digestive health with good intestinal flora, allowing our digestion to work more efficiently.

IMMUNE BOOSTING

Kombocha is full of antioxidants, probiotics and enzymes, which are all great for blasting out bad bacteria and toxins from the body, boosting our immune system!

PROMOTES CREATIVE EXPRESSION & VIBRANT ENERGY LEVELS

Along with supporting the physical health of our liver, Kombucha is fantastic for unblocking stagnant and stuck Qi in our Liver.  Good strong flowing liver Qi will promote a strong flow of our creative expression, allowing us to come up with new ideas and inspirations in our lives, promoting feelings of positivity!

BALANCE SUGAR CRAVINGS

Excess tension and stagnation in the liver can lead to intense sugar and sweet cravings.  Consuming Kombucha regularly, along with other fermented and sour tasting foods such as pickles, sauerkraut lemons etc, will greatly help to release this stagnant tension and balance out those sugar cravings for good!

* THE FIVE ELEMENT THEORY derives from Traditional Chinese Medicine where every season aligns with certain foods, a taste, body organs, emotions and a flow of energy or Qi.  These elements represent the rhythmic cycle of nature, enabling us to utilize each element to create balance in our health & well being so we can feel our absolute best. The Five Elements are Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Tree or Wood.

**MACROBIOTICS is a philosophy derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine where the understandings of The Five Elements, Yin & Yang and Food Energetics are used to create balance across body, mind and spirit.

*** QI literally translates as ‘energy flow’ or ‘life force’ and is the central underlying principle of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Martial Arts
