While we are being encouraged to stay home, Aloÿse from the Borzoi Bookshop in Stow- on-the-Wold is continuing to host the Daylesford Book Club online. Read on for her reading recommendations during lockdown and for information on how to join our online Book Club.

What have you all been reading over the past few weeks?  Some people have found it difficult to concentrate so here are a few ideas from the Borzoi.

Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens is a beautiful debut novel written by a renowned wildlife scientist. Set in North Carolina it is murder mystery, a love story, a celebration of nature and a story of how to survive living alone.

Hamnet by the amazing Maggie O’Farrell is a great new hardback novel set in 1596 in Stratford-upon-Avon. It is certainly pertinent to our current situation. It is the story of a bond between twins, a marriage and the plague. I was captivated and moved.

For something light and amusing try The Red Notebook by Antoine Laurain. Translated from French this is a charming love story and if you enjoy this there is The President’s Hat by the same author.

Was it only February when Emma was released as a brilliant new film? Why not dust off a Jane Austen or even try Gill Hornby’s novel Miss Austen which tells the story of the relationship between the two sisters Jane and Cassandra.

The  best book I have read so far this year is The Bell in the Lake by Lars Mytting. For those of you who have read Sixteen Trees on the Somme you have a treat in store and it is the first in a trilogy.

Keep reading and let us know any good books you have read.

Our Daylesford Book Club normally gathers in The Glasshouse at the Farm on the last Wednesday of every month at 10am. For the time being, Aloÿse is hosting discussions over Zoom. Participation is free; please Email her on mail@borzoibookshop.co.uk if you are interested in joining in.

The book being discussed on Wednesday 27th May is A Woman of No Importance by Sonia Purnell. Aloÿse always reveals the title she has chosen for the following month at the end of each book club meeting – we will share this information as soon as we can so you can read along!

Daylesford Book Club members enjoy 10% off Book Club titles from the Borzoi bookshop and Aloÿse is offering free postage anywhere in the UK for orders of up to three books as well. She is also hand-delivering books within a ten mile radius of Stow-on-the-Wold. Contact her directly for further details.
