Ten Reasons We Love Bone Broth

A staff and customer favourite at Daylesford, bone broth is packed with health benefits.

Stock your fridges and freezers to make sure you always have some handy.

From protecting our bones to detoxifying the liver and nourishing the skin, bone broth is an underrated health hero. Our resident nutritionist, naturopath and wellness expert Rhaya Jordan recommends a daily cup of bone broth.

Our bone broth comes ready-made straight from our Cotswolds farm’s kitchens, so all you have to do is heat it, sip and enjoy.

Read on to explore ten reasons why we love bone broth.

1. NUTRITIONAL POWERHOUSE

Bone broth is known to be rich in vitamins and minerals including calcium, magnesium and phosphorous. As bone broth is in liquid form, many of these nutrients are in a soluble form that can be easier to digest.

2. PROTECTS JOINTS AND BONES

Many of us are becoming deficient in essential nutrients that support bone health, including calcium. By slowly cooking, we dissolve the collagen and cartilage of the bones into the broth, and these glycoproteins become the building blocks of our joints, keeping us lubricated and moving freely. These glycoproteins simply cannot be found in vegetables, fruits, pulses, nuts or grains alone, so we recommend including bone broth as part of a healthy and balanced diet.

3. NOURISHES THE SKIN

The gelatin found in bone broth is a great boost for skin, hair and nails. As tissues and bones contain collagen, cooking the collagen turns it into gelatin which provides the body with essential amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. Proteins are what support cell renewal, so giving ourselves a boost of these with bone broth can aid regeneration of cells, something our body naturally does less of as we age. Therefore, including bone broth in your diet can be an easy beauty tonic.

4. HEALS THE GUT

We are what we digest, and many of our guts are suffering from poor diets, rushed eating, bad digestion and stress. Over time, this can cause damage to the gut lining. The gelatin in bone broth can bind water in the digestive tract, protecting the lining of your intestines and aiding repair. This combined with a fibre-rich foods including fermented foods can help to maintain a healthy, happy gut, which in turn can support immunity. Explore our organic ferments and their benefits.

5. PROMOTES SLEEP

The amino acids found in bone broth may also promote better sleep. A 2015 study in found that the amino acid glycine is a safe therapeutic option to improve sleep, and that people who take glycine before sleeping (by enjoying a cup of bone broth with supper, for example) may feel that they sleep better and feel more rested the following day.

6. HYDRATION

Bone broth is known to provide electrolytes and carbohydrates, and can rehydrate us better than water alone due to the electrolytes it contains. So, drinking one cup per day can give your body a hydrating boost alongside the water you should already be drinking.

7. A SUSTAINABLE SOLUTION

At Daylesford we have a zero food waste policy, which is why our bone broth is one of our most-loved products. Making use of the whole animal and ensuring nothing goes to waste, our bone broths are made from our grass-pastured, organic cattle and chicken bones. Our talented chefs cook them down slowly overnight until the bones become soft, then filter off the liquid and add any remains to our compost heap.

8. ALL ABOUT UMAMI

Bone broth is umami, which is one of the five basic tastes along with sweet, salty, sour and bitter. Umami is a delicious, satisfying flavour that is brilliant as part of a soup, stew and risotto, rounding out flavour and giving depth to these dishes.

9. VERSATILE

Bone broth is as versatile as it is delicious. Combine with your favourite vegetables for an easy warming soup, sip it from a mug to start or end your day, or transform leftover roast chicken or meat by adding bone broth, noodles and aromatic ingredients.

Our organic chicken bone broth is made just as you would at home, with chicken, water, onion, celery, leeks, fennel, garlic, thyme, sea salt and black pepper – it’s as simple as that.
