How to choose the right species?
Check how big your preferred tree is expected to grow and how far its canopy will spread to ensure you pick a species that’s suitable for the garden and can be enjoyed by future generations.
Where should I plant it?
Choose a sunny spot with good soil and rainwater, away from drains and buildings. If planting a tree directly in a lawn, keep a 50cm grass-free circle around the base.
When should I plant It?
The best time of year to plant a tree is when the roots are dormant so they are less easily disturbed; this is typically from mid-November to late March. However, it is possible to plant your tree all year round with some simple considerations -
Avoid planting your tree when the ground is frozen or waterlogged in the winter. If planting your tree in the warmer months, soak your tree in the pot it arrives in and plant it as soon as it is delivered. During the first few weeks water your tree frequently to ensure the roots don’t dry out and have a chance to establish.
