Everyone knows that bees make delicious honey but actually, they are far more important than that.
Our founder, Carole Bamford, has long believed that bees tell us a lot about the state of nature, the health of our planet and therefore our own health. Pollinators have suffered over recent decades. As over 70% of the UK is farmland, the Daylesford Foundation has committed to improving agricultural techniques to benefit pollinators via the AGRICOLOGY project.
Our organic farm helps to support the basis of healthy pollinators – plenty of flowers to forage nectar and pollen whilst never using any insecticides. However we go a step further with the management approach of our bees. As with our livestock, we encourage the bees to exhibit natural traits and do not overly-manipulate their behaviours to suit unsustainably high yields. We allow natural swarming, we do not automatically re-queen and we only take as much honey as the bees can afford to give us, so they only ever need supplementary feeding in an extreme winter.
