Daylesford's magical landscapes are the inspiration for this exhibition of paintings by Gary Cook RI SGFA. His atmospheric artworks are a response to the farm's sweeping hills, wooded valleys and wistful wetlands and a celebration of how the estate's respect for time-honoured traditions is helping to restore beauty and a harmonious balance to this precious corner of the Cotswolds. This enlightened approach is more than simply rewilding, it is the considered replenishment and regeneration of the land. In other words, this is a study of how to ReWold.
As an environmental artist, Gary explores the interconnectedness of the surrounding Cotswold landscape along with Daylesford's trees, meadows, wetlands and their delicate relationship with the species that rely on them. He paints mainly en plein air in ink, watercolour and charcoal and the leitmotif running through his work is a message of ecological hope, characterised by subtle silhouettes of the fauna that are dependent on the trees and surrounding countryside, often insects or wildlife he has spotted while out painting are depicted in the final work.
About the artist:
Gary Cook RI SGFA is an environmental artist who explores our complicated relationship with and often detrimental impact on nature. The combination of naturalistic painting and narrative script that characterise his works are a direct result of his background in the newspaper industry where he was the senior artist and associate editor for The Sunday Times for 26 years. He is a council member of both the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colour (RI) and the Society of Graphic Fine Arts (SGFA) where he has twice won the Best in Show award. He is also a member of The Arborealists. He writes regularly for Resurgence and The Ecologist.
